Our History

HLM Landscape Services traces its roots back to 1841, when French nurseryman Francis Xavier Hillenmeyer established a small nursery in Lexington, Kentucky. Originally focused on test orchards, vineyards and nursery plants, the business quickly expanded to a 100-acre site by 1847, cultivating fruit trees, landscaping plants and ornamental vines.

In the early 1900s, the third generation of Hillenmeyers shifted their focus from fruit trees to ornamental and decorative trees, setting the stage for modern landscaping practices. By the mid-20th century, the company diversified further, opening garden centers and developing a strong reputation in commercial landscape maintenance. The 1990s marked a major milestone as Hillenmeyer expanded into turf maintenance for Kentucky’s renowned horse farms and rebranded as Stephen Hillenmeyer Landscape Services.

In 2016, Hillenmeyer celebrated 175 years of continuous service with the next generation, Chase Hillenmeyer, stepping into a leadership role. Shortly after, the company simplified its name to Hillenmeyer, embracing a modern identity while preserving its legacy.

The company entered a new chapter in 2019 by joining HeartLand, LLC, a Kansas City-based organization that partners with premier landscaping companies to enhance operational excellence while maintaining their unique cultures. Now, as HLM Landscape Services, we leverage over 180 years of experience to provide innovative, high-quality landscape solutions while continuing to prioritize our clients and employees.
